Transportation Accident Attorneys

Millions of Americans use public transportation as their primary method of travel. The convenience and affordable nature makes busses and shuttles a preferred choice for many. A mass transit company is known as a common carrier in a legal sense. Common carriers include commuter buses, tour buses, airport shuttles, ski shuttle buses, casino buses, airport shuttles, commercial airplanes, cruise ships, taxi cabs, certain trucks, and school buses. As common carriers, the drivers, operators, and companies have a duty to keep passengers safe. That is why driving these common carriers requires special training, licensing, and maintenance regulations.

When something goes wrong, injured parties may file a lawsuit against the common carrier for negligence caused by the driver, inadequate training on behalf of the company, negligent maintenance, or defective parts that were installed.

If you or a family member have been injured in a bus crash, it is crucial that you talk to an attorney right away, as you only have a certain amount of time to file your lawsuit. Statute of limitations prevents you from filing a lawsuit long after you have sustained your injuries. Time limits to file your suit vary depending on the nature of your claim. If you have been injured by a government-run common carrier, you may have to give special notice. The statute of limitations can be very short, so it is important that you act quickly.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, almost two-thirds of all fatal crashes involving large trucks occurred on rural roads, and 25 percent occurred on rural or urban Interstate highways.

  • Thirty-four percent of all fatal crashes, 22 percent of all injury crashes, and 19 percent of all property damage only crashes involving large trucks occurred at night (6:00 pm to 6:00 am).
  • The vast majority of fatal crashes (84 percent) and nonfatal crashes (89 percent) involving large trucks occurred on weekdays (Monday through Friday).
  • Collision with a vehicle in transport was the first harmful event (the first event during a crash that resulted in injury or property damage) in 73 percent of fatal crashes involving large trucks, 83 percent of injury crashes involving large trucks, and 75 percent of property damage only crashes involving large trucks.
  • Rollover was the first harmful event in 5 percent of all fatal crashes involving large trucks and 2 percent of all nonfatal crashes involving large trucks.
  • 28 percent of work zone fatal crashes and 11 percent of work zone injury crashes involved at least one large truck.
  • There were 11.2 fatal large truck crashes per million people in the United States in 2013, a 6-percent increase from 2010.

School bus accidents are surprisingly common. In fact, more than 8,000 children each year are brought to the emergency room with injuries sustained from school bus crashes.  Children who are involved in school bus accidents may suffer extensive physical and emotional injuries. Along with the pain and suffering, a child may feel uneasy about ever riding a bus again.
